Social justice Prayer

Prayer

Let us pray that we may be one:

Lord, Jesus Christ who reached across the ethnic boundaries
between Samaritan, Roman and Jew
who offered fresh sight to the blind and freedom to captives,
help us to break down the barriers in our community,
enable us to see the reality of racism and bigotry,
and free us to challenge and uproot it
from ourselves, our society and our world. Amen

PENTECOST

PENTECOST IS HERE: THE HOLY SPIRIT IS HERE

We are not alone, the Holy Spirit is with us: The greatest Gift of the Father and the Son Jesus Christ, the Gift of LOVE.

Pentecost is the Church's birthday. It is indeed the cause for our celebration. The word Pentecost is Greek and it means "50th day." Fifty days after Easter Sunday, we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and their followers, and the beginning of their Earthly ministry to make disciples of all nations. As we read from the Act of the Apostles 2:1-11, at Pentecost, the Apostles and their followers were gathered in a room. Jews from all over the world were gathered with Peter, the leader of the Apostles and the Eleven. At this time, a great wind blew and a flame appeared as a tongue of fire, which split itself into many individual flames above the heads of all those present. The Holy Spirit came upon these people and each began to speak in tongues. Despite the fact many had no common language, they were perfectly able to understand one another. Also, in 1 Corr 12:4 St. Paul tells us: “there are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit” (1 Corinthians 12:4). He continues: “There are different forms of service, but the same Lord; there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone” (vv. 5- 6). Diversity and unity: St. Paul puts together two words that seem contradictory. He wants to tell us that the Holy Spirit is the one who brings together the many; and that the Church was born this way: we are all different, yet united by the same Holy Spirit.  So, Holy Spirit, who is love, brings us together in love and unity. Jesus in the last prayer before he ascended into heaven prayed for us to be one. And He sends the gift of Spirit to unite us in love. Let us understand one another, feel for one another, be compassionate to one another, and discard division of any nature. We are one body, we are all children of the same Parent God.

Let us consecrate ourselves to God the Holy Spirit to guide us always.

ACT OF CONSECRATION TO THE HOLY SPIRIT

On my knees before the great multitude of heavenly witnesses I offer myself, soul and body, to You, Eternal Spirit of God. I adore the brightness of Your purity, the unerring keenness of Your justice and the might of Your love. You are the Strength and Light of my soul. In You I live and move and am. I desire never to grieve You by unfaithfulness to grace and I pray with all my heart to be kept from the smallest sin against You. Mercifully guard my every thought and grant that I may always watch for Your light and listen to Your voice and follow Your gracious inspirations. I cling to You and give myself to You and ask You by Your compassion to watch over me in my weakness. Holding the pierced Feet of Jesus and looking at His Five Wounds and trusting in His Precious Blood and adoring his opened Side and stricken Heart, I implore You, Adorable Spirit, Helper of my infirmity, so to keep me in Your grace that I may never sin against You. Give me grace, O Holy Ghost, Spirit of the Father and the Son to say to You always and everywhere, "Speak, Lord, for Your servant listens." Amen

NOVENA TO THE HOLY SPIRIT: Seventh Day

SEVENTH DAY

Growth in the freedom that Love Gives

Heal our wounds - our strength renew; On our dryness, pour thy dew; Wash the stains of guilt away! Come, 0 Blessed Spirit of Counsel. Make my thoughts holy, my love pure, and my works pleasing to God. Father, guided by Your Spirit, may I strive to make loving choices and respect all life. May we be aware of our dignity as Your sons and daughters, redeemed with the Blood of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, Our Lord.

O Spirit of love,
give me grace to know you better,
and to taste and see how sweet and how gracious you are.
The joy of the world is nothing;
and the pleasure of creatures is nothing;
the desire of the eyes is nothing;
but you are all in all,
and at your right hand there are pleasures for evermore.
With you is the joy which does not fade,
and the love which does not cease.
With you is the day of rest
that remains for the people of God.
With you is the fullness of happiness.
O Spirit of glory, let the thought of this be ever with me,
and let the hope of this be the day-star of my soul.
save me from evil and keep me from sin.
O Spirit of peace, my own Beloved,
I trust you and give myself to you.
you dost teach me;
for you are the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete,
whom the Father sent in the name of Jesus. Amen.

The Litany to the Holy Spirit

The Litany to the Holy Spirit

The Litany to the Holy Spirit gives us a great summary of who he is and his actions in our lives.

When speaking to his apostles before his crucifixion, Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit when his time on earth ended. “And I will pray the Father, and he will give you another Counselor, to be with you forever … the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” (John 14:16, 25)

This promise was fulfilled at Pentecost when the Holy Spirit was poured out upon the apostles. The Holy Spirit continues to be present and active in the world. However, we don’t always turn to the Holy Spirit as much as we should. Frequently, perhaps, we address our prayers to the Father or to Jesus, but how often do we invoke the Holy Spirit.

One of the reasons may be on account of our unfamiliarity with the Third Person of the Holy Trinity. We simply do not know how the Holy Spirit can influence our lives and so we naturally turn to the persons of the Trinity that we are most familiar with, instead of turning to the Holy Spirit.

Without going into the depths of Trinitarian theology, a simple way to draw closer to the Holy Spirit is to pray the ancient Litany to the Holy Spirit. Besides giving various titles to the Holy Spirit, such as “Comforter,” or “Sanctifier,” it also describes the activity of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit can be invoked to “inflame us with the flame of Thy love,” or “enlighten us with Thy heavenly inspirations.”

During these 9 days to the Solemnity of Pentecost (the descent of Holy Spirit upon the Apostles), let us also pray the Litany to the Holy Spirit and learn more about the gift God has given us on our pilgrimage to Heaven.

Lord, have mercy on us.
Christ, have mercy on us.
Lord, have mercy on us.

Father all-powerful, have mercy on us. Jesus, Eternal Son of the Father, Redeemer of the world, save us. Spirit of the Father and the Son, boundless life of both, sanctify us. Holy Trinity, hear us.

Holy Spirit, Who proceeds from the Father and the Son, enter our hearts. Holy Spirit, Who art equal to the Father and the Son, enter our hearts.

Promise of God the Father, have mercy on us.
Ray of heavenly light…… have mercy on us.
Author of all good…… have mercy on us.
Source of heavenly water Consuming fire….
Ardent charity…….
Spiritual unction
Spirit of love and truth
Spirit of wisdom and understanding
Spirit of counsel and fortitude
Spirit of knowledge and piety
Spirit of the fear of the Lord
Spirit of grace and prayer
Spirit of peace and meekness
Spirit of modesty and innocence
Holy Spirit, the Comforter
Holy Spirit, the Sanctifier
Holy Spirit, Who governs the Church
Gift of God, the Most High
Spirit Who fills the universe
Spirit of the adoption of the children of God

Holy Spirit, inspire us with horror of sin.
Holy Spirit, come and renew the face of the earth.
Holy Spirit, shed your light in our souls.
Holy Spirit, engrave your law in our hearts.
Holy Spirit, inflame us with the flame of your love.
Holy Spirit, open to us the treasures of your graces.
Holy Spirit, teach us to pray well.
Holy Spirit, enlighten us with your heavenly inspirations.

Holy Spirit, grant us the only necessary knowledge.
Holy Spirit, inspire in us the practice of good.

NOVENA TO THE HOLY SPIRIT IN PREPARATION OF THE SOLEMNITY OF THE PENTECOST

NOVENA TO THE HOLY SPIRIT IN PREPARATION OF THE SOLEMNITY OF THE PENTECOST

May 22nd – 30th, 2020

DAY 1

Holy Spirit, third Person of the Blessed Trinity, Spirit of truth, love and holiness, proceeding from the Father and the Son, and equal to Them in all things, I adore You and love You with all my heart. Dearest Holy Spirit, confiding in your deep, personal love for me, I am making this novena for the following request, if it should be Your holy Will to grant it: (mention your request).

Teach me, Divine Spirit, to know and seek my last end; grant me the holy fear of God; grant me true contrition and patience. Do not let me fall into sin. Give me an increase of faith, hope, and charity, and bring forth in my soul all the virtues proper to my state of life. Make me a faithful disciple of Jesus and an obedient child of the Church. Give me efficacious grace sufficient to keep the commandments and to receive the sacraments worthily. Give me the four Cardinal Virtues, Your Seven Gifts, Your Twelve Fruits. Raise me to perfection in the state of life to which You have called me and lead me through a happy death to everlasting life. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Concluding Prayer

O Lord Jesus Christ Who, before ascending into heaven did promise to send the Holy Spirit to finish Your work in the souls of Your Apostles and Disciples, deign to grant the same Holy Spirit to me that He may perfect in my soul, the work of Your grace and Your love. Grant me the Spirit of Wisdom that I may despise the perishable things of this world and aspire only after the things that are eternal, the Spirit of Understanding to enlighten my mind with the light of Your divine truth, the Spirit on Counsel that I may ever choose the surest way of pleasing God and gaining heaven, the Spirit of Fortitude that I may bear my cross with You and that I may overcome with courage all the obstacles that oppose my salvation, the Spirit of Knowledge that I may know God and know myself and grow perfect in the science of the Saints, the Spirit of Piety that I may find the service of God sweet and amiable, and the Spirit of Fear that I may be filled with a loving reverence towards God and may dread in any way to displease Him.

Mark me, dear Lord with the sign of Your true disciples, and animate me in all things with Your Spirit. Amen.

Thursday of the sixth week of Easter

John 16:20b “… you will grieve, but your grief will become joy.”

The Thursday of the sixth week of Easter is traditionally the Ascension of our Lord Jesus into heaven, 40 day after His resurrection. However, in some parts of the word, it is celebrated on the seventh Sunday of Easter. So today we two sets of readings to reflect upon. This time, let us take the common theme which is given in the Gospel according to John John 16:20b.

Easter Season has two major pillars:  the Resurrection and Pentecost.  When we look at them closely, we remember that although they are joyful days, each one is preceded by an event of misery, great loss, tears and inconsolable situations to the followers of Christ.  Before Easter (Resurrection) there was a Good Friday when our Lord Jesus died, and Pentecost is preceded by the Ascension of the same Lord.  Although the Death and Ascension of the Lord are the occasions of sorrow, they make the joyful Resurrection and Pentecost possible.

Jesus ascension was a moment of sorrow and abandonment to the disciples but he says in these last supper discourses: “it is for your benefit that I go…” (Jn 16:7) and that “if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back again and take you to myself, so that where I am you also may be” (Jn 14:3).
